Conservation works at historic timber roof.
Year : 2023
Project : Volunteering project - Conservation works at historic ensemble.
This project with the European Heritage Volunteers involved the restoration of a roof of a 20th century barn which is part of the historic buildings within the Lohra Castle historic ensemble.
Lohra Castle includes historic buildings dating back from the 11th century, including the remains of a tower, a Romanesque chapel, a manor house and stables.
The team was tasked with the deconstruction and construction of part of the wooden roof. During the project, the eroded parts of the construction were disassembled and partly/completely replaced by new components.
For instance, the rotten parts of the beams were cut, replaced with new timber and connected using traditional joints.
